A Pub Rich In History
Long before the bustling nights we know today, the Coach and Horses was an iconic landmark in Abergavenny. Our tale begins in 1833, when the first Abergavenny Eisteddfod was held right here at the pub. What started as a humble celebration of Welsh culture soon grew into the largest cultural festival in Wales, drawing people from far and wide. With poetry, music, and spirited competitions, the Eisteddfod quickly etched its mark in history, and the Coach and Horses became part of that incredible legacy.
But the history of the Coach and Horses goes even deeper. Back in the day, it was part of the grand Gunter Mansion, and during its time there, the pub played a crucial role in one of Abergavenny’s most dramatic chapters. It was here that an attempt was made to hide the last Catholic priest to be burned at the stake in Britain – a story that adds a layer of intrigue to this already historic venue.
Over the years, the pub has evolved, from its original three-room layout to the open-plan bar you see today, with the addition of a separate pool room on a lower level. But through all the changes, one thing has remained constant – the Coach and Horses has always stood as a testament to Abergavenny’s rich past, where history and community continue to meet. Today, we proudly carry on that tradition, where the spirit of the Eisteddfod and the echoes of history live on every time you step through our doors.
